Workato alternative — Workato vs Skippr

Workato is recipe automation. A recipe is a trigger plus action steps. A Task is one successful action. Triggers, skipped branches, and failed steps do not count. Reruns do. The bill is an edition, a credit balance, and add-ons. Credits are the common unit: recipe Tasks, pipeline rows, API calls, Genie prompts, IDP pages, and event-stream publishes all draw the same pot. Editions on the current card are Standard, Business MCP, Enterprise MCP, and Workato ONE. Data integration (ETL, ELT, reverse ETL) starts on Business MCP. Data Pipelines and Event Streams start on Enterprise MCP. An On-Prem Agent (OPA) is the hop into your network: 3 on Business MCP, 10 on Enterprise MCP, 30 on Workato ONE. Concurrency is 1, 1, 15, and 30. AWS Marketplace lists one Enterprise workspace with 1,000,000 tasks at 143,750 USD. Data pipelines do a full sync, then incremental CDC, billed per row extracted. Destinations include Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, Postgres, SQL Server, and S3 Iceberg (Glue, or a REST catalog: Horizon, Polaris, Unity, or self-hosted iceberg-rest). Recipe CDC is trigger-based, not a log tail. This is not a Streamhouse. There is no Iceberg ∪ WAL.

Skippr is an open Streamhouse you run as one Rust binary. Write skippr.yml (or the same thing in Python), discover, sync. You query live state over Iceberg ∪ WAL, and the history is ordinary Iceberg in your bucket. No Task. ELT into a warehouse is one path, not the product.

What Workato is good at

A recipe that already turns a Salesforce event into a Slack, a ticket, and a warehouse row. That is the product. MCP and Workbots are why some estates treat it as an automation layer, not ELT. S3 Iceberg on a pipeline is a real dest if you are already on Enterprise MCP. If the job is "app event to many SaaS," that is a real product.

Where the job is wider

Workato is an automation platform. It is not a Streamhouse. There is no Iceberg ∪ WAL. There is no skipprd query on in-flight rows. Iceberg writes live on the pipeline SKU, not on every recipe. You still query Athena or Trino after.

Credit math is the ops. Every successful action is a Task. A Repeat loop is a Task per iteration. Pipeline rows are a different metric that still burns credits. OPA and concurrency caps decide the edition before you talk volume.

Skippr will not run a Workato recipe. Skippr also will not match the SaaS connector catalog or Workbots. If the job is "automation we already staff," Workato is the narrower tool. If the job is live SQL on Iceberg you run, Workato was never that.

Getting started

Install skipprd from the install guide, or pip install skippr. The three tabs write the same skippr.yml. Then discover, sync, and query.

Which to choose

Choose Workato if you want recipes from app events into SaaS and warehouses, and the next system after the recipe is enough.

Choose Skippr if you want one binary, live SQL, and Iceberg files that stay yours. Skippr will not run a Workato recipe.

Install from Install. Connector and query reference live in Developer Docs. For optional onboarding in your VPC, Enterprise Jumpstart or Contact.
